Why do some people have curly hair?

I dont mean as in genes. So please no answers of that nature. I mean is the hair follicle different or something? Like do the particles coil up? Or sit in a wonky line whereas in straight hair they sit flat? I was just wondering seeing as I have curly hair and I know its down to genes but wondered what physical difference there is in the hair itself?
